Casks for a Cure

pink ribbonOn October 24th from 6:30pm – 9:00pm the Rockfish Seafood Grill at Southpoint Mall in Durham will see some of the hardest to find beers around – casks from three of the areas soon-to-open breweries.  Mystery Brewing in Hillsborough, Steel String Brewing in Carrboro, and Haw River Farmhouse Ales in Saxapahaw will all be tapping a special cask for the event.

Tickets to attend Casks for a Cure will be $10 and all proceeds are going to Susan G. Komen For a Cure to help raise money for breast cancer research.  All attendees will also get an event t-shirt.

In addition to the 3 rare casks from these not-yet open NC craft breweries, there will be several raffles and some free food tastings from Rockfish!

If you are a home brewer, this is an EXCELLENT event to attend, as all of the brewers that will be serving got their start as home brewers…in fact, they technically ARE still home brewers.  These three breweries are definitely raising the bar and making a good name for NC home brewers.

I had the opportunity to speak with Ben from Haw River Ales and he is very excited about the unique cask he has prepared for the event, saying that the bourbon-aged wood chips should really complement this seasonal brew.

When: October 24th, 6:30 – 9:00 PM
Where: Rockfish Seafood Grill, 8030 Renaissance Parkway St. 905, Durham
What: 3 rare casks from 3 soon-to-open NC craft breweries
Why: Fundraiser for Susan G. Koman Foundation
Cost: $10 donation

Beer List

Mystery Brewing Company: Gentlemen’s Preference Blonde Ale

A light, easy drinking blonde ale with a touch of sweetness and a touch of hops. Our version is made with Trappist Ale Yeast for an extra little bit of dryness and fruity aroma that makes for a truly refreshing blonde ale. For the “Casks for a Cure” event Hibiscus Flowers will be added into the cask. ABV: 3.8%

Haw River Farmhouse Ales: Winter Harvest Dark Saison

Our Winter Harvest Dark Saison is a seasonal specialty, using pilsner, munich and abbey malts, a little flaked rye and our Belgian Saison yeast. Our recipe includes pumpkin, butternut squash, sweet potatoes and acorn squash from a host of NC farms through Eastern Carolina Organics in Pittsboro and clover honey from Cane Mountain Farms in Graham. We also spice it just a little at the end of the boil with fresh-ground nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon and allspice. Finishing just a little sweeter than a traditional saison, this version weighs in at 6.9% ABV and has been specially brewed for Rockfish Grill’s “Casks for a Cure” fundraising event with an ounce or two of American oak chips steeped for a month in Maker’s Mark bourbon.

Steel String Brewery: Steel String Black Wheat Ale

Steel String Black will be a year round dark offering from Steel String, and is based on combining some of our favorite styles. It is brewed with 52% white wheat, and includes three other specialty malts that give it a complex and rich grain profile. We then aggressively hop Steel String Black with Cascade hops, giving it a hop bite with a citrus and grapefruit profile. Finally, Steel String Black is finished with a Bavarian Heffeweizen yeast, giving it a complex, spicy yeast flavor. Special just for this event, we have cask aged Steel String Black with cocoa nibs and dry hopped it with an ounce of German Hallertau whole leaf hops.
