Bull City Burger & Brewery is hosting their first ever homebrew competition. However, if you are looking for an official BJCP event with lots of categories, good feedback sheets from judges, and medals up for grabs, you’re in the wrong place.
This competition is more of a free-for-all and the winner will be picked based on the whims of the judges. There are no categories, so the best beer wins.
The winning beer will get scaled up and brewed on the 7 bbl system at the brewery. The winner will get to pour the first pint and can bring in some friends for the first round on the house. While this sounds pretty cool, it results in some pretty funky rules that you don’t typically see.
For starters, you can’t use any adjuncts (other than honey, which can be locally sourced) because they don’t want to pay the outrageous price to purchase enough for 7 barrels. Also, you have to use their house yeast strain (either ale or lager). With these two limitations, there are a lot of styles that are out of the question.
But this contest is not for those who are overly-serious. It is a fun event raising money for charity (Brew for the Cure). It very much has the vibe of BCB&B – very laid back and anything goes. Somewhat flying by the seat of their pants, but isn’t that what makes it fun.
I will be entering a new recipe (hopefully it turns out well!) and I encourage all of you to enter as well. It should be fun and will definitely be worth the trip out to the Brewery. Entries are due by noon on August 27th!
